My interest in marine subjects goes back to a time when, as a creative director, I was responsible for promotional art work for Camper & Nicholson yacht builders, Ratsey & Lapthorne sail makers, and Jack Holt yachting equipment etc. Also having a father in law who was a retired naval commander cemented my affection for the subject.
As with my other categories of subject, these paintings are started with my dark paint method using a cotton rag to reveal light through a mix of Burnt Sienna and French Ultramarine oil paint to kick start the dynamic effect I look for.
